Hemphill County adopted its fiscal 2024–25 operating budget and set a total property tax rate of 0.5300 at the commissioners' regular meeting on Aug. 26, 2024.
Commissioner Nicholas Thomas moved to adopt the proposed budget; Commissioner Dawn Webb seconded and the motion carried with all commissioners and County Judge Lisa Johnson voting in favor. County officials said the adopted budget will raise $911,845 less from property taxes than the prior year, a 13.14% decrease. County staff reported that the amount of property tax revenue attributable to newly added property on this year's tax roll is $9,080.34.
The court also approved the property tax rate the same day. Commissioner Tim Alexander moved to adopt a maintenance-and-operations rate of 0.3800 and a Road and Bridge rate of 0.1500, for a combined 0.5300. The motion passed without opposition. Meeting minutes record the action as both adopting the budget and approving the tax rates during the same session.
Court leaders and commissioners presented the decisions as final for the fiscal cycle; no amendments to the adopted budget or tax rate were recorded during the meeting. The court closed the budget hearing on Aug. 26 and proceeded to other agenda items.
