Horry County details stormwater CIP projects, grant funding and flood reductions

Brandon Wagner, Horry County stormwater director, presented April performance metrics and five recently completed or imminent capital improvement projects, saying, "we increased the capacity under that road 250%, reducing the flood elevations by 1.5 feet at that crossing in the hundred year storm," for the Hemingway Chapel project. He described miles of ditch cleaning, pipe installations and hundreds of plan reviews and inspections as part of recent operations.
Wagner detailed project-level impacts and funding: Jones Road (completed in May; 200% capacity increase; project cost $635,000; county share $95,000 after an REIA grant), 57th Place (box culverts; $361,000; county share ~$54,000), Highway 9 (54-inch culverts; $3.1 million; county share roughly $450,000) and McCormick Road (two 10x8 box culverts, $1.5 million fully grant-funded). Overall, the five projects cost about $5.5 million, with grants covering about $4.8 million and Horry County contributing roughly $700,000 (about 13%). Wagner said the projects together reduce flooding impacts for approximately 50 homes, a church and several public roadways and thanked the county's grant and community development staff for support.
