Resident urges transparency on foster youth emancipation services; administrator announces pet vaccine clinic

During the public-comment portion of the April 21 meeting, resident Theresa Darr raised concerns about services for foster youth leaving county care. Darr said volunteers are working to document emancipation stories and stated that "260 teenagers were emancipated by the JFS director over the last 48 months." She further cited national data and asserted that "60% of sex trafficking victims are former foster youth," arguing that the county needs to provide evidence regarding county-funded vocational vouchers and demanding "immediate transparency" about whether those resources exist.
County Administrator Colbert responded to other business by announcing a low-cost dog vaccine and microchip clinic scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Employment Opportunity Center; "Vaccines are $10 per dog, and microchips are available for an additional $10," he said, and noted the clinic is limited to Montgomery County residents with a two-dog maximum per owner. Commissioners McDonald and Dodge then offered community updates, including a salon event for youth in county care and the Winter Guard International championships, which Commissioner Dodge said draws "over 65,000 people" and generates "an estimated $34 million in direct economic impact." The meeting adjourned at 1:56 p.m.
