Commissioners say public safety building search continues as costs rise

A resident asked whether the county had any update on plans for a new jail or public safety building. Commissioner Sasha L. Rittenhouse said the county "continues to try to get state and federal funding" and that the project remains under review; she added that every day the project is delayed the estimated cost increases. "Originally it was $50 million and now costs are estimated to be at $100 million," she said.
Sheriff Chris Clark said the county has evaluated over 30 properties as potential sites but has not found a location that meets all the needs and minimizes community impact. Commissioner Richard L. Lohnes said the legal and funding processes continue and that the county is considering housing inmates off site in the short term if pressure on the jail persists. Officials said they will pursue state and federal capital funds but acknowledged competition for limited dollars.
