Board recommends exploring low-level green certification and incentives for developers

Board members suggested the city adopt voluntary green-building incentives and a simple certification path to encourage greener redevelopment without discouraging investment.
"I would suggest certification, the lowest, that would be a start," one board member said during discussion. Tony Palermo, assistant director of community development, noted the city does not currently require LEED or Florida Green Building certification but said staff is open to exploring incentives and working with public-works and parks projects to model green practices.
A board member offered to connect staff with CJ Davila of the Florida Green Building Coalition, which maintains examples and lists of municipalities with varying levels of certification. Palermo said staff will examine the examples and would welcome a list of jurisdictions that have adopted green-building practices.
Members framed certification as a way to collect existing best practices and provide developers a clearer, achievable path to greener construction, while recognizing that mandatory new regulations could discourage redevelopment in some cases.
