Youth Bureau reports therapy wait lists and staffing challenges; travel authorization approved
Summary
Wyoming County Youth Bureau reported Early Intervention active caseloads (62 active, 18 awaiting evaluation), pre-school enrollment (137 active), and therapy wait lists. Committee approved overnight travel for two staff to a statewide summit (May 19–20) with an approximate $300 county cost.
The Youth Bureau told the Human Services Committee that Early Intervention services for children 0–3 show 62 active cases with 18 waiting for evaluation and service-specific wait lists (speech therapy 16, occupational therapy 3, physical therapy 10, special instruction 20). Pre-school services (ages 3–5) reported 137 active children with related service wait lists; the STARS program enrollment was 157 children.
Director Phillips said the department "continues to communicate regularly with WCCH relative to their ability to provide Therapist services," and Committee Chair Roberts observed that workforce shortages "is not just a Wyoming County or New York State issue, it’s nationwide." The committee approved overnight travel for T. Phillips and A. Fialkowski to attend the Early Intervention & Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs 2026 Statewide Summit Forum in Troy, NY, May 19–20, 2026; the county car will be used and approximate cost is $300 budgeted.
