Local officials warn 72 SNAP cases will be affected by reinstated ABAWD work rules

Heather Sheehan, Principal Social Services Program Specialist, told the Wyoming County Human Services Committee that "the statewide ABAWD waiver ended February 28, 2026. By June 1, 2026, many individuals aged 18-64 must work or participate in qualifying work activities for at least 80 hours a month to maintain benefits." She said about 72 of roughly 1,500 local SNAP cases would be affected under the reinstated rules.
Sheehan briefed the committee on groups newly exposed by the waiver’s end, saying the changes eliminate many previous exemptions and will affect veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness and youth aging out of foster care. She noted that failure to comply for three consecutive months results in termination of benefits and that federal changes to the Thrifty Food Plan and utility-deduction rules may reduce benefit amounts.
