Jackson County awards $184,770 bridge contract; road crew reports equipment issues and material shortages

Jackson County Road Superintendent Joe Gardner presented a formal bid from Norfolk Contracting Inc. and the Board on July 20 approved the contract for a steel-beam bridge with a Husker Steele concrete deck at Q and 113 Roads for $184,770.00. Commissioner Linda Gerhardt moved approval and Commissioner Keith Kelly seconded; the motion carried 2-0.
Gardner reported crews completed ditching at several locations, that the W4 bridge concrete had cured and would open this week, and that crews will install a tube on 302 east of X. He said truck 05-17 required towing and repairs and that Brandon Hundley’s blade is in the shop with an oil leak; Peyton is scheduled to take a CDL test the next day. Gardner said the county's haydite supplier cannot fulfill the order until possibly October due to high demand from KDOT and MoDOT, affecting chip-seal patching operations. Commissioner Kelly raised a complaint that Road and Bridge vehicles used a private hayfield to turn around after rain and left ruts; Gardner said the road is a dead end and will follow up.
