Habitat for Humanity thanks Edgewater officials, asks council to expedite permits and donate land

Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity thanked Edgewater leaders for volunteering and support, said it plans to build nine houses this year and requested expedited permits, fee waivers and more land to meet growing demand for affordable homes.
Mark Billings, executive director of Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity, thanked the City of Edgewater for support and presented photos of completed and in-progress homes, including a finished renovation at 1859 Pine Tree Street and current builds on Unity Tree and Mango Tree.
“We’ve set a goal to build 9 homes this year… We’ll be breaking ground on 7, 8, and 9 within the next month,” Billings told council, noting 85% of Habitat’s workforce is volunteer. Billings asked council to consider expedited permitting, potential permitting fee waivers and assistance finding land for future builds.
Bob Perry, Habitat’s head of construction, said the Mango Tree build is progressing quickly and that the organization can use additional parcels within the city. City council members and staff thanked Habitat for volunteer labor and said staff would follow up on permit and land inquiries.
