Resident Chivas Cornish addressed the Police Jury during the March 10 meeting to question the Sheriff’s authority to impose and collect taxes on trail-ride events. Cornish asked whether the Sheriff is the only party being required to pay, how the tax amount is determined in advance, and whether failure to pay current or past taxes could result in denial of a special event permit.
The minutes record that Cornish was "advised that the Police Jury retains final approval" for special event permits. The Police Jury President, Quanika H. Muse, is recorded as stating the Sheriff has authority to collect applicable taxes, while Mrs. Muse also advised that the current ordinance does not provide for denial of a permit based on nonpayment of taxes. The Jury took no formal action on the matter; the minutes recommend Cornish consult directly with the Sheriff for further clarification.
Provenance: Discussion recorded in SEG 008.
