Commissioners vote to keep Adams Road open and to open state-repaired bridge

The board revisited a long-running safety issue on Adams Road and the surrounding Grama Hill area, where residents and officials have reported speeding, reckless driving and accidents for more than a decade. One commissioner summarized roughly 16 years of studies, neighborhood meetings and enforcement efforts, saying earlier closures and traffic-calming measures reduced incidents but the issue recurred when the bridge was damaged by tornadoes.

The chair emphasized legal and financial liability concerns if the county were to physically close a public road or place county infrastructure in the right-of-way: "I cannot take the risk of having a $30,000,000 lawsuit against our citizens," he said, citing a high-dollar lawsuit involving another jurisdiction as an example. After discussion about alternatives (abandonment, enforcement, targeted closures), a motion was made to keep Adams Road open and to open the repaired bridge; the motion was seconded and the vote carried.

Commissioners said they would continue working with engineering and public-safety staff on options to reduce speeding and improve enforcement, but they concluded that formal abandonment or permanent closure presented disproportionate legal and fiscal risk given the county's responsibilities for public roads.
