Ottawa County commissioners pick chair, approve depositories and routine appointments

The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners reorganized its leadership and approved a set of routine administrative motions at its Jan. 12 meeting in Minneapolis. Commissioners moved and voted to appoint Scott as chair for the coming year and to designate Citizens State Bank, Bennington State Bank and Bank of Tescat as county depositories for 2026.
The board also voted to confirm department-head nominations presented by staff: Chris Smith as public works director, Troy McQueen as county appraiser and Keith Coleman as facilities director. The board moved to adopt Resolution 26-02 appointing Jason Gibson as emergency management director, setting an effective date of Jan. 12. The clerk noted the resolution language would be changed so the effective date matched the board action.
Why it matters: these routine approvals set leadership and operational channels for county business for the year, including where county funds are held and which staff lead core departments. Commissioners said the actions were intended to ensure continuity and to prepare the county for the year’s projects.
"Motion carries," the chair said after the vote on the chair appointment, and later the commission approved the slate of nominees and the resolution regarding the emergency manager.
