Wendy White, serving as liaison, presented a petition and design concept from resident Jason Schwartz and his children requesting a Hurricane Ian memorial in Centennial Park. White read the petition and relayed that the family had gathered over 300 signatures; she also cited a Florida Department of Law Enforcement press release that listed 149 confirmed deaths from Ian and noted that Lee County accounted for 72 of those deaths.
Tom Hall, the city’s public art consultant, recommended that the proposal be considered by the Public Art Committee and coordinated with the CRA and county partners to ensure the memorial’s siting and design do not conflict with other public‑art plans for Centennial Park. Council members suggested outreach to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and other Lee County jurisdictions most affected by Ian before committing city funds or a location; staff said the idea would proceed through the Public Art Committee and additional stakeholder review.
