Council approves $1.07M design and purchase for all-inclusive playground at Roberto Clemente Park

The Fort Myers City Council on Aug. 5 approved a $1,071,368.06 design and purchase order with PlayMore Recreational Products for an all‑inclusive playground at Roberto Clemente Park in Ward 1.

Parks and Recreation Director Hicks told council the project required lead time from manufacturers and estimated equipment delivery and installation would take roughly 12 to 30 weeks after the city issues a purchase order. “We went to a couple different manufacturers...we're looking at roughly between 12 to 30 weeks for once we are able to purchase the equipment,” Director Hicks said, adding staff has requested a state extension to June 2025 to allow for procurement and installation.

Councilmember Versa asked whether shade structures for parents could be included at the start of the design process; Hicks said he would check with designers to determine feasibility within the project scope. The council voted with no recorded opposition to approve the request and advance the item for procurement.

The project is funded in part with $1,000,000 secured in the state budget, according to State Rep. Jenna Persons Molica, who thanked city leadership and staff for moving the project forward. Molica said she worked with the city to ensure the appropriation would be used for inclusive equipment.

The city will return with purchase‑order and procurement documentation as required under local policy. Staff indicated mid‑spring to early summer 2025 remains the target for opening, contingent on manufacturer lead times and timely issuance of the PO.
