Iron County committee agrees to waive slip fees when boats cannot leave Saxon Harbor; project funding remains uncertain

The committee discussed how to handle slip fees for boats prevented from leaving Saxon Harbor due to sediment at the mouth of the harbor. Citing three sailboats affected in 2025, the committee approved a motion—moved by P. Hanson and supported by W. Thomas—not to require the slip fee for boats that cannot safely launch and leave until conditions change. The committee also approved offering a refund or holding the 2025 slip fee as a credit for the one boat that launched in 2025 but could not leave; slips may be rented temporarily in the interim.
Separately, Forest Administrator Eric Peterson told the committee the Saxon Harbor/Harbor Drive project was included in the House version of Department of Homeland Security direct-congressional funding, but that the DHS funding remains held up in the Senate. Stantec Engineering is developing design work agreements, and Land & Water Conservation is planning to redo three of four bioretention basins within the marina in spring 2026. Peterson reported five open slips for 2026 and said the county had taken over $75,000 in camping reservations through February; he also said a $1.5 million K-N grant reimbursement check was mailed to Iron County on March 6.
