Troup County extends moratorium on data-center zoning changes for 90 days amid community concern

After a public hearing Feb. 17 that included remarks from opponents, the Troup County Board of Commissioners voted to extend by 90 days the moratorium on a proposed text amendment related to data centers.
Austin (speaker 16), a planning staff member, told the board the current moratorium expires March 16 and staff sought an extension through June 14 to allow time to review public comment, board recommendations and neighboring jurisdiction actions. Cindy Hutchings (speaker 15) of the Troup County Anti Data Center Coalition urged the board to extend the moratorium, citing concerns including potential PFAS contamination at some data-center sites, low-frequency noise and effects on air and water quality. Hutchings said more research and coordination with surrounding cities is needed.
No speakers signed up to oppose the extension during the hearing; after a brief board discussion, members voted to extend the moratorium to June 14 and directed staff to continue review. The extension applies only to the moratorium period for the ordinance text amendment; it does not approve or deny any particular project.
