Sheriff's office adjusts transport van order; county settles easement dispute to clear grant application

The Jay County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 27 approved several public-safety items: a modification to a transport van order, a property-settlement payment to resolve an easement dispute and a jail lighting replacement contract.
Chief Deputy Ben Schwartz asked the board to remove a previously approved divider and add three additional seats to the FR Conversions transport van for an additional $2,353, increasing the van's total to $85,017. "The total cost for the van will now be $85,017," the office recorded. Commissioners approved the change unanimously.
County Attorney Wes Schemenaur presented a settlement for property at 402 W Seventh St. in Portland to resolve an ongoing easement dispute. The county agreed to pay $13,900 for appraised land plus $7,500 for the loss of mature trees (total $21,400). Schemenaur said the agreement would allow the highway to submit the project for the Community Crossings Grant due Jan. 31. Commissioners approved the settlement unanimously.
Sheriff Larry "Ray" Newton presented a quote from All Circuit Electric to replace 52 emergency ballasts and 44 exit lights throughout the jail for $23,297.80; the commissioners approved that work by motion. The decisions were recorded as unanimous votes.
