Lantana police honored for lifesaving response to I-95 overpass incident

The Lantana Police Department presented life-saving and employee awards during the Nov. 18 meeting. Chief (speaker 2) described an incident on Sept. 7, 2024 around 11:50 a.m., when officers responded to multiple 911 calls of a woman in distress on the I-95 overpass. Two officers intervened and helped secure the woman; the chief showed body-worn camera footage and commended the officers' courageous response.
The department also recognized Detective Christian Vargas for investigative work that led to identification and arrests in a series of crimes, including an alleged double homicide overdose case now moving through federal court; the chief said Vargas helped link the suspect across jurisdictions and assisted other counties in making arrests. Vargas accepted the award and thanked his colleagues and family.
