During public comment, a nearby resident warned the proposal would "affect that shopping center" and said heavy backups on Lantana Road already create daily frustration. The resident also criticized a request for a 0-lot-line exception as unfair to existing business owners who did not receive the same waiver.
Council and staff told the meeting the site-plan process will require engineers to demonstrate emergency-vehicle ingress and egress and to show delivery-truck movements. Kelly Harrington, representing Racetrack (200 Galleria Parkway), urged the council to consider fuel-station safety features, saying crews install shear valves and emergency shutoff stations so that "it's not connected to the tank or the pump or anything like that".
A longtime firefighter cautioned that pump-related fires do happen, saying he has responded to incidents where "it hit the pump and it lit everything up." The mayor thanked applicants for their work but said the corner was "just the wrong spot."
A council member motioned to disapprove SC24003 and a second followed; the council voted in favor, 5-0. The rejection followed concerns about congestion, circulation for delivery trucks and the potential impact on adjacent businesses.
Looking ahead, the council closed the quasi-judicial portion of the meeting and proceeded to routine business.
