FPL representative outlines 'hardening' projects and storm resources for Lantana

Amy Kemp, FPL’s local liaison to Lantana, told the council FPL is pursuing a ‘hardening journey’ that includes converting wood poles to concrete, undergrounding selected customer lines and investing in solar and storage to diversify generation.
Kemp said, “we have really developed what I what I have come to call our hardening journey,” and explained the utility’s feeder hardening and undergrounding programs in residential corridors such as Pine and Garnet. She noted feeder conversions to concrete improve wind resistance and that vegetation remains the principal cause of outages, so hardening reduces outage frequency and speeds restoration. Kemp also told residents FPL “does start preparing 72 hours prior to a storm” and that the company works with the Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center to prioritize restoration of critical infrastructure like hospitals and 911 centers.
Council members asked about undergrounding possibilities for Lantana specifically and about pole heights and transformer spares; Kemp said there were no undergrounding projects in Lantana for 2025 yet but that reliability metrics and plans are reviewed annually and staff can return with quarterly or annual updates.
