Council considers half-time communications specialist to boost outreach and ADA compliance

As part of the proposed 2025 budget, staff proposed adding a half-time communications specialist to increase resident outreach, support events and help remediate ADA-related website issues. Staff said the current communications workload exceeds one person's capacity: the existing staff handles multiple platforms, event support and the city website, and additional hands would allow more proactive resident outreach and faster ADA compliance work.
Council members generally supported the intent but requested the existing communications staff present an overview of current output and priorities before council approved a new position. Several members suggested a fixed-term or two-year pilot period so the city can evaluate return on investment and require measurable outputs. Staff said job descriptions and cost estimates were included in the packet and that they could bring additional detail and expected deliverables to a future meeting.
