James Houchins briefed the council on the SOVA Blueways Initiative, a regional effort linking waterways across nine counties. He said Patrick County currently has only two identified public water access points — Talbott Dam and the Reservoir — and asked that the Mayo River Rail Trail be included in the county's access planning.
Council members also heard that the Appalachian Gateway Committee continues upgrades on the Mayo River Rail Trail, including site enhancements and an artist-fabricated metal tree being developed by John Fern. Staff said they will continue to pursue river access improvements for the South Mayo and other locations as part of regional blueways coordination.
