Board hears first reading of several policy updates, including accountability report card deadline

District policy staff presented a package of updates for first reading at the Aug. 27 Arcadia Unified Board meeting, asking that the board consider returning the set on consent once minor edits are addressed. The packet included changes to BP 0510 (School Accountability Report Cards), BP 5113 (Absences and Excuses), BP 5113.7 (Weapons and Dangerous Instruments), BP 6164.2 (Guidance and Counseling Services) and BP 5177 (Summer Learning Programs).
On BP 0510, staff noted the revision "requires that accountability report cards be issued annually" and that they "be available on or before, February 1 of each year," aligning district practice with new legal requirements. The guidance-and-counseling revision aligns counselor duties with MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), expands academic and career counseling definitions, clarifies nondiscriminatory practices and parent notification expectations, and includes crisis counseling provisions.
Board policy staff said they reviewed CSBA guidance, corrected several typographical errors in the draft, and aimed to bring the policies back on consent after board review. No substantive objections were raised in the first-reading discussion.
