Arcadia Unified’s board unanimously approved three memoranda of understanding Jan. 28 that provide temporary leave support to employees affected by recent Los Angeles County fires.
Assistant superintendent Dr. Hirschu described the agreements as a rapid, collaborative response among the district and its three bargaining associations (ATA, APSA and CSEA). "Basically, these MOUs are structured to give employees more leave," he said, explaining the agreements add 10 district‑funded days for qualifying employees, permit donated leave to be distributed through catastrophic leave banks, and lift the district's personal‑necessity (PN) restriction for the year so affected employees can access their full leave allotment.
Board members asked whether the agreements are permanent; staff replied the MOUs are intended as a special, time‑limited program that expires at the end of the current school year, and that CSEA’s signed MOU must also go through a statewide approval (a so‑called "6‑10" process) before full implementation. The board thanked negotiating teams for moving quickly; the MOUs were approved 5–0.
