Council ratifies $26,775 emergency radiator purchase for water-plant generator

Public Works staff reported that a routine start-up check found antifreeze on the generator room floor and vendor inspection determined the radiator needed replacement and could not be repaired. Staff said the generator is more than 20 years old but had low running hours; PanTropic Power (regional Caterpillar dealer) was the sole source for the replacement part.
The council ratified an emergency purchase from PanTropic Power not to exceed $26,775 and authorized the town manager to execute the agreement and any amendments. Councilmembers asked about the generator's remaining service life and recommended planning for longer-term replacement or budgeting. Staff said the radiator replacement was necessary to ensure generator reliability ahead of storm season.
"It powers a 650-kilowatt generator that's the size of a small car," the public works director said in describing the scope and necessity of the replacement. The motion to ratify carried 5-0.
