Lantana library to pilot one-to-one tutoring with Literacy Coalition; seeks volunteers

Christine Feiler, Lantana's library director, told the council the library will pilot a partnership with the Literacy Coalition this fall to provide one-to-one tutoring on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. She said the program will require an eight-hour initial training and a weekly one-hour commitment from volunteers.
"We will be a site where kids could come to get tutored one on one on Thursdays from 03:30 to 05:30," Feiler said, noting volunteers must complete training. Feiler also cited recent usage gains at the municipal library: staff checked out about 1,000 more books this summer, issued 355 new library cards (up from 200 last year) and saw program attendance of 673 people.
Feiler said the pilot aims to help younger readers (first through third grade) and emphasized the role adults play: "When you're getting excited about reading, they get excited about reading." She asked council members and residents to spread the word and consider volunteering; staff will provide volunteer applications and follow-up training information.
The program will rely on volunteers, and Feiler asked interested residents to contact the library. The town manager previously noted the council's support for literacy programming and thanked library staff for summer services.
