Houston County approves fire department reclassifications and pay matrix to boost recruitment

Commissioner Robinson presented and the board approved a package of personnel actions for the Houston County Fire Department that reclassifies Investigator position #2060 (Grade 19) to Deputy Chief - Prevention (Grade 23), adds Deputy Chief - Training position #2070 (Grade 23) and Captain - Prevention position #2071 (Grade 19), effective Feb. 3, 2025. The board also approved a pay matrix to award an annual step increase for each certification or advanced training completed, with accounting to make any necessary budget adjustments.
Fire Chief Chris Stoner thanked the board and said the changes "will help greatly with the recruitment and retention of firefighters and will also increase the service level of the Houston County Fire Department for County residents." Chairman Perdue and personnel leaders confirmed available Fire Fund revenue would support the reclassifications and pay matrix.
