Woodbury County Treasurer Tina Birch warned the board and residents about a widespread tech scam in which people receive text messages purporting to be from the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicles and claiming outstanding traffic tickets that must be paid by June 6 or risk license suspension or prosecution. Birch said the treasurer's office and local law enforcement are receiving numerous calls and walk-in customers and that the county posted a public notice.
"Our records show that as of today, you have you still have outstanding traffic tickets, and they're telling people that if they don't get them paid and straightened up by June 6, that they will have their license suspended or they may be prosecuted," Birch said, urging residents not to click links and noting that the county does not collect such fines via text. She said the Sioux City Police Department and the county treasurer's office issued public notices and staff received an influx of contacts as word spread.
