Board approves first reading to rezone land for New Cooperative grain storage

Planning & Zoning staff presented the zoning commission's final recommendation to rezone a parcel (ending in 1012) from Agricultural Preservation (AP) to General Industrial (GI) for New Cooperative Inc. The board opened a first public hearing, and company representative Frank Huisman described the proposal as a response to growing volume needs and said the design would keep farmer traffic moving. "This will allow our trucks to dump 1,700,000 bushels of grain without interfering with the farm," Huisman said.
No members of the public spoke in opposition at the hearing. Supervisors noted the parcel sits just outside city limits, and staff said rezoning would streamline NuCoOp operations adjacent to an existing general industrial parcel. After closing the hearing, the board moved and approved the ordinance's first reading by voice vote (5‑0). The matter will proceed to subsequent readings as required by local ordinance.
