The Henry County Commission on July 23 set a public hearing for Aug. 25 to consider the county's 2026 tax levy and directed staff to publish required notices.
Clerk (reading minutes) explained the state process and paperwork county officials receive from the auditor and the Board of Equalization, saying the state-provided packet sets a ceiling on what each jurisdiction may collect. "So we'll put tax levy setting for Henry, Carol, and my senior citizen's tax plan on new business," the clerk said, and later proposed, "Let's shoot for the 25th public hearing for the tax levy." The clerk noted levy notices must be published at least 10 days before required filing deadlines and reminded commissioners the BOE meets the third Monday of July.
The commission discussed that assessed valuations can roll values back automatically and that townships must follow the same state-determined calculations. Commissioners agreed to return in August with finalized documentation and to publish the hearing notice in the local paper to meet statutory publication requirements.
Next steps: staff will finalize the levy packet after BOE numbers are available and publish the hearing notice in advance of the Aug. 25 meeting.
