After adjourning the commission session, the board convened as the Kane County Board of Equalization to approve property‑tax exemptions. Clerk Shanelle and staff explained that prior practice had limited reapplication outreach to religious and low‑income housing organizations; staff discovered the office had not been formally approving exempt properties at the BOE as required and has sent reapplication packets this year.
Shanelle said staff printed a large packet that identified roughly 600 exempt parcels across categories including roads, open space, government and nonprofit properties; two organizations had not returned their forms before the March 1 deadline. The board approved the returned applications, provisionally approved the two pending ones pending receipt of paperwork, and directed staff to coordinate with the assessor and auditor to audit exemptions going forward.
