Council adopts revised ballot language to increase transportation sales tax

Staff said the change was requested because the previously approved language described the measure as a "renewal," which could mislead voters; the revised resolution clarifies it is an increase. "We changed language within the resolution ... to reflect that it's a increase in the sales tax of point 2% to point 3% instead of the renewal for the existing GBT," a staff speaker said while explaining the need for the late amendment.
The clerk read the resolution aloud before a motion to adopt. A council member moved to adopt, a second was recorded, and the mayor called for voice vote. "All in favor, say aye," the mayor said; council members responded and the motion carried. The council also discussed next steps to form committees to prepare pro and con statements for the county auditor by the statutory deadline.
The council moved quickly to adopt the change because staff said the corrected language must be submitted to the county auditor by the August filing deadline. Council signaled support for holding a special meeting to appoint committees that will draft the voter statements required under state law.
