Vernonia special education director outlines professional development and explores Unified Sports

Susanne Myers, Special Education Director, told the board she began reviewing patterns in students' Individualized Education Programs and saw that goals and reported progress prompted a deeper look at barriers to carrying progress into general education. "Students take the skills they are learning back into the general education classroom as all lessons are designed to promote progress and should be aligned to general education instruction," Myers said.
Myers also described work to expand inclusive extracurriculars, noting that "Unified Sports operates under the umbrella of Special Olympics." She said she is coordinating with high-school leadership to identify which programs students want; board member Alicia Mahoney suggested partnering with Columbia County transition services to support transitions to post-school activities.
