Committee advances resolution to designate first Sunday in February as Chaplain's Day

The House Naming and Designating Committee on Feb. 2 advanced Senate Joint Resolution 7, which would designate the first Sunday of every February on Tennessee’s calendar as Chaplain’s Day to honor four chaplains who perished in the 1943 sinking of the Dorchester.
“This bill honors four chaplains who were serving on the Dorchester,” Representative Bostle said, adding that the four “actually took off and gave their life vest to other soldiers that day so that they would survive the sinking of the Dorchester and they all, all 4 of the chaplains actually perished.” Representative Bostle also told the committee the resolution had passed the Senate unanimously.
Committee members raised no questions during discussion. Clerk Mr. Clark announced the tally as “8 ayes, 0 nays, and 0 present not voting,” and the committee voted to advance SJR 7 with a positive recommendation to the State and Local Government Committee. The resolution is now pending further consideration in that committee.
