Tempe to activate four Vision 0 safety corridors this summer, city engineer says

Tempe staff announced the activation of four Vision 0 safety corridors this summer, naming Rural (between University and Broadway), University (between McClintock and Price), Southern (between McClintock and Price) and Elliott (between Harrell and Kyrene) as the first set for July through September. Eli Velosin, a senior civil engineer in Traffic Engineering who manages Vision 0 projects, said the corridors are roughly one mile long and are intended to concentrate engineering and enforcement where safety needs are highest.
Velosin presented performance data comparing the same corridors and time windows in 2024 with 2023, saying the combined corridors have seen an 18 percent reduction in serious and fatal crashes. "We are decreasing our serious and fatal crashes by 18 percent along those, safety corridors," Velosin said. She noted the program seeks incremental, targeted changes rather than large construction projects and that yellow signs will mark the corridors to raise driver awareness.
The plan builds on a council-adopted Vision 0 policy from 2018 and its action plan adopted in 2019; Velosin said the city's approach focuses first on the highest-severity crashes and then on measures that reduce severity for all road users.
