Edisto Beach council prioritizes stormwater upgrades while waiting on external funding

Mayor Crawford Moore opened the Jan. 29 goal‑setting retreat by framing the session as a planning exercise for the 2026–2027 fiscal year. Town Administrator Mark Aakhus summarized findings from Davis & Floyd Engineering’s Interior Lagoon Study and presented recommended stormwater‑management improvements to increase the Town’s resiliency to future storm events. "The Town will seek all available external funding opportunities; if necessary, remaining costs may be covered using Town reserves and ATAX funds," Aakhus said.
Council directed staff to pursue potential funding sources, including FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), state and federal earmarks, and support from the Colleton County Transportation Committee (CTC). Members agreed to wait until mid‑February for funding responses; if commitments are not in hand, Council will revisit next steps at its March meeting. The Council did not take any formal vote at the retreat; the discussion was informational and directional.
