Sweetwater County Assessor Dave Deavis told commissioners March 4 he wants permission to solicit bids for contracted GIS services after the county’s GIS position became vacant and the public map server fell out of date.
"We have since the GIS position became vacant ... and what we'd like to explore is the a contract option," Deavis said, asking for authorization to go to bid so a local contractor could update parcel data and perform special projects. He emphasized that banks, realtors and insurance companies rely on the map server and that some parcels are currently misrepresented.
Commissioners discussed budget options—Deavis said he could use a professional-services line in the assessor's budget or pursue a budget amendment if needed—and agreed that local providers should be sought first. The board voted unanimously to authorize going out to bid for GIS contract services and directed staff to prepare procurement documents.
