On curriculum language, staff read required wording intended to prevent districts from refusing instructional materials solely because the materials include the perspectives of protected classes. As presented in the packet, staff quoted the policy text: "must not prohibit, use, or refuse to approve the use of textbooks or instruction materials on the basis that the textbooks or instruction materials include the perspective" of particular groups. Several board members said the wording could be controversial and asked for more time to review the required language and consult the district attorney for clarification.
Administrators also explained changes to directory information that tighten what can be released: moving to a short list (student name, photograph, major field, participation, dates of attendance and awards) and removing items previously considered directory information such as email and street address. Public-records administrative rules were updated to include a provision to close requests if a requester fails to reply to clarification within 60 days and to charge labor and material costs when processing time exceeds 30 minutes.
