Fire District No.1 adopts $30.1M operating budget, moves mill levy above revenue neutral rate and approves wage adjustments

The governing body for Sedgwick County Fire District No.1 adopted a $30,140,800 operating budget and a property tax levy of $22,171,711, roughly 17.000 mills, which exceeds the district's revenue-neutral rate of 16.338 mills. County Manager Tom Stultz and CFO Lindsey Poverseau led the budget presentation and explained the numbers.
Lieutenant Kyle McHugh, speaking for firefighters' Local 2612, thanked the board for recent investments in pay, staffing and apparatus and said the district is in "possibly the best spot in the history of the Fire District". Commissioners approved a 2.0% scale adjustment to the pay plan and directed transfers from contingency to operational accounts to fund the change. The board also authorized an advanced provider pay stipend to incentivize paramedic certification.
The resolution to levy a property tax rate exceeding the revenue neutral rate and the adoption of the Fire District budget were both approved by roll-call vote.
