OUA: Septic-to-sewer contract signed; construction to start during rainy season

John Hayford, Executive Director of the Okeechobee Utility Authority, updated the council on ongoing utility projects and noted a seven-slide presentation (Exhibit 9) was added to the official minute file. He reported the SW 5th Avenue Septic-to-Sewer Project contract was signed earlier that day; construction is estimated to begin during the rainy season and the contractor will have one year to complete the project.
Hayford said design, permitting and construction costs will be covered by Florida Department of Environmental Protection appropriations and a United States Department of Agriculture loan/grant. He said property owners will be responsible for the OUA connection fee, abandoning septic tanks and any house-side pipe installation, though owners may perform the work themselves, hire a contractor or authorize the OUA to bid the work (with costs covered by other grants). He also said the SW 2nd Avenue vacuum pump contract is scheduled for OUA board consideration in June and the pump will be shared between the two projects. The update was informational.
