Oakridge Fire Chief says new Type 3 engine will serve as 'first out' for nearby structure fires

Oakridge Fire Chief Scott Hollett presented the department's July report to the Westfir City Council and said repairs and pump testing on the Westfir engine are complete and hose testing is upcoming. Chief Hollett said the damaged ladder on the Westfir engine has not been replaced; he will explore alternatives so Westfir would not need to pay $1,500 for a new ladder.
Chief Hollett announced Oakridge had received a new Type 3 engine from an Oregon State Fire Marshal’s grant and said the engine "would be used as the 'first out' engine for structure fires" in the Hazeldell area. He told councilors it would be ideal for a Westfir engine to reside in a Westfir fire station to improve response times; he said four volunteers would be the minimum to provide sufficient redundancy for a local station.
Councilor Kelly Packard asked how many volunteers would be needed for a Westfir station; the chief replied that four is the minimum. The chief also expressed interest in hosting a public open house at City Hall in October or November to discuss fire safety and defensible space.
