Committee members on July 28 discussed an idea to allow the Appointment and Alignment Committee to surface and forward multiple recommended candidates when there is a large, strong applicant pool instead of naming only a single asterisked candidate.
One member proposed that when the committee receives 10 or more applicants for a position, it could recommend two candidates to the board. The chair said there was merit to the idea and suggested staff could include a more fleshed-out discussion on a future agenda. "I mean, we don't usually get, what 16. 16 great candidates. So ... put a couple recommended candidates up to the board," one committee member said.
Members also raised procedural considerations — for example, whether recommending more than one candidate could be misinterpreted as implying weaker candidates when one is not asterisked. The committee left the idea for further development and asked staff to add the proposal to a future meeting agenda for a formal discussion.
