Council approves salary ordinance setting city clerk pay increase, leaves mayor and council unchanged
Summary
An ordinance approved on Aug. 19 sets the city clerk’s salary commensurate with department directors with a 4% increase each year of the term starting May 2025; the mayor and council salaries remain unchanged.
The Galesburg City Council approved ordinance 24-10-18, which sets salaries for the mayor, city council and city clerk. City Manager Hansen told the council the clerk’s base salary would be aligned with department director ranges (24 EX) and proposed a 4% increase of the base salary for each of the four years starting in May 2025, while the mayor and council salaries would remain the same.
Councilmembers discussed timing and public input; several said they supported the clerk’s raise but did not want to vote themselves a raise. Council moved the ordinance to second reading and approved it on the subsequent vote. Hansen offered to provide background research on past adjustments and comparisons to other elected bodies if council wanted more detail.
