Curry County approves $250,000 intergovernmental agreement with Oregon Department of Forestry

Commissioner Pat Hollinger moved and the board approved an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Oregon Department of Forestry that will allow grant funds to flow between Curry County, ODF and the U.S. Forest Service for on-the-ground forest projects.
Hollinger told the board the first project tied to the IGA "is in the amount of a a $250,000, and it's to start, helping repair a lot of the forest service roads that they have listed, within the intergovernmental agreement." He said projects will be selected "one by one," that the county road department will likely perform some work and that certain contracts will be subcontracted as necessary. Hollinger added the agreement carries reporting requirements and agency rules that the county will follow.
The chair and other commissioners praised Hollinger's work getting the agreement to the board and emphasized road maintenance as a preventive measure against wildfire. Commissioner Ben Coker said the county will reap broader benefits from the arrangement: "this county is going to reap a harvest, not just a wood, but other good things as a result of the pathway that you've set up." Commissioners noted other counties have been waiting for similar IGAs so they can pursue comparable projects and shared resources.
The board voted unanimously to approve the IGA after a motion by Commissioner Pat Hollinger, seconded by Commissioner Ben Coker. The item does not specify which exact road projects will be funded first beyond the general priority-setting process described by Hollinger; further project-level decisions and budgets will be addressed as work is proposed and approved.
