Bethany Selmar reports 6,429 July trips and heavy summer event service

Bethany Selmar, director of Knox County Transit, told the Board of Commissioners on July 28 that the system has logged 6,429 trips so far in July, including 2,225 event or route trips and about 120 trips to Hiawatha Water Park. "For July, so far, we've done 6,429 trips," she said.
Selmar said a large share of recent activity has been group and event transportation: shuttle service for the Hellbender Festival, a Piper car event, multiple Kenyon College events and other community shuttles. She said roughly 2,400 people were transported to summer events across the last two months and that the system regularly runs buses with 18 seats for group bookings.
She described summer service patterns that reduce some regular trip counts while enabling many special-event runs, and said staff are already booking back-to-school and welcome-week shuttles for campus partners. Selmar also flagged staffing constraints: she has filled a night-bus position but has one full-time driver vacancy and said some large youth tours required three buses to cover dispersed pickup locations.
Commissioners thanked Selmar for the update and noted the department's community partnerships and seasonally varied demand.
