Staff previews Tampa Theater restoration as centennial approaches

Ron Veil, a planner with the City of Tampa Historic Preservation staff, told the Barrio Latino Commission that the Tampa Theater and adjacent office building are the focus of the commission's monthly "preservation in progress" feature and that "this project's goal is to fully restore the Tampa Theater in time for its hundredth anniversary." Veil reviewed the site's 1925–26 history, Sanborn maps and construction types, and described current repairs including plaster work and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems.

Veil said staff is converting underutilized office and storage space into more than 3,000 square feet of classrooms to support the theater's expanding educational programming, and that the restoration team is aiming to boost lobby and stage lighting while preserving historic features such as the proscenium arch and ornamental ceiling. Staff noted the theater is listed on the National Register and was among the first designations covered by Tampa's preservation ordinance, which frames certificate of appropriateness reviews.

The presentation was for information; no Commission action was taken. Staff directed commissioners to the department's "bricks and mortar" newsletter for additional images and context, and said more detailed design work will return during future certificate‑level reviews.
