"I, Nivda Alam, chair and on behalf of the Durham Board of County Commissioners, do hereby proclaim August 2024 Equitable economic development month in Durham," the chair read. The proclamation cited local examples — including reference to Hayti and West End neighborhoods — and named historical leaders such as John Merrick and Cece Spaulding to contextualize Durham’s efforts to rebuild and support Black enterprise.
Staff and the chair noted related upcoming supplier-diversity programming and a forthcoming MWBE cohort contract to support small and minority-owned businesses.
