Ellendale council approves $17,000 concrete driveway for new fire hall

The Ellendale City Council voted to accept a Sonic Concrete quote to pour the south driveways at the new fire hall for $17,000. Council Member Jon Asplund moved to hire Sonic Concrete; the motion was advanced by Charlie Berg and passed by roll call with all members voting aye.
City Clerk/Treasurer Steve Engel told the council that APX project scope changes and subcontract deductions left construction and CRIF fund balances sufficient to cover the concrete work. Engel explained the proposed slab measures and preparation: “60 ft. X 24 ft. X 6" depth,” with base preparation, rebar and likely fiber to be installed by Sonic Concrete. Council members said temporary gravel would be torn up by heavy trucks and could increase future costs if the pour were delayed; they agreed to proceed now.
The vote authorizes the city to contract directly with Sonic Concrete for this driveway work rather than having APX perform the pour (which would have incurred an additional 10% contractor fee), and council instructed staff to proceed with scheduling. The final APX retainage will remain withheld until the overall punch list is completed, per Engel.
