Urbanna staff: drilling crew to take core samples July 27 as part of bridge work; insurance and engineering remain hurdles

At the work session the Chair updated the council on bridge repair planning, saying a drilling crew is scheduled to take core samples on July 27 and that the town must wait for lab results before proceeding with design or procurement. Staff emphasized an insurance requirement: an engineered design and stamped drawings will be needed before an insurer will cover a temporary structure.

"The drilling crew will be here on the 27th to drill the core samples in in the on the road," the Chair said, adding that staff expects to solicit at least two quotes for a temporary steel bridge and hopes to keep costs affordable even if some expense must come from town funds. Council members noted logistics (barriers, traffic control) and that the insurance company had said engineered drawings are a precondition for coverage; staff will return with lab results and any cost estimates.
