Durham proclaims Welcoming Week, outlines resource fairs and international soccer event

The board proclaimed Welcoming Week in Durham County and heard from county and city staff about a set of events aimed at immigrants and refugees, including a job and resource fair, workshops, and an international soccer event intended to unite communities.
"We have been celebrating welcoming week for now, 3 years," Maria Padilla, who works on community engagement for the City of Durham’s Department of Neighborhood Improvement Services, told the board. Nao, the Durham City–County immigrants and refugee affairs coordinator, said roughly 14.4% of Durham’s population is foreign‑born (approximately 46,000 people) and described plans for a mini resource fair at the soccer event and a larger resource fair led by the Office of Equitable Well‑being on Sept. 17.
Commissioners applauded the interagency collaboration and encouraged residents to attend the events; staff said a provisional language access coordinator will join the Office of Equitable Well‑being to support outreach and language access.
